A deputation, representative :of the Raglan County Counoil, waited on the Minister for Public Works yesterday and asked that a subsidy should be granted by the Government on the sum of £4000, which the council is raising for road-making. ■ The deputation said it would be satisfied with' a subsidy of 10s. in the £. The Hon. R. M'Kenzie said he was very willing to assist local bodies which showed a disposition to help themselves, but applications for subsidies of a . similar nature ran into a very large amount, and he could ,not grant them all. He was" inclined to" consider the. application favourably. The Minister was also waited upon yesterday with a request that a traffic bridge should be constructed across the Waikato River at Ngaruawahia, in addition to the railway bridge. The Minister said he did not think the bridge was required. •' Negotiations for the purchase of land from the Natives in the Urewera Country are proceeding. The Government agent is now at Ruatoki paying out money to the Natives and completing arrangements. The purchase of 70,000 acres has been effected up to ■ the present. ■; The elrection of a school committee for the.'South/Wellington' school district to replace that which resigned some time ago because'of differences with the headmaster, takes plaoe on Monday next, October 3. The secretary of. the board has received the following nominations Messrs. / Barnes, Clark, Howman,- Morton, Pollock, Muller, and Duff. ; By the regulations other candidates may be nominated at the" meeting..
