SWIMMING.
WELLINGTON CLUB. The following is a precis. of the sixteenth annual report and balance-sheet of the Wellington Amateur Swimming (Jlub, which is to be presented, at the club's -annual meeting, to be held on Tuesday next: —The club started the pe&son with 103 financial members, and during the season 129 new financial members were added to the-li'st, making a total of 232 members to date. The junior members : had made splendid progress, and. had been well catered for. The Duthie Cup was, however, competed for the past by teams uig the various primary schools of the city and. suburbs, and was' again won ov the Clyde' Quay School. Mr. T. Shields held his claisses for teaching the very small boys regularly throughout iio season. .... Swimming among the ; .'■ seniors, has ieen very satisfactory throughout the -season; Dr. Chappie's Cup: was competed for over the usual distances,: 50, iOO, and I'so yards respectively!. . and was won for the season by L. Silver. The club's annual carnival .took place on March 12 in ideal weather. .'The outstanding feature at,the carnival■-' ■ was: tho competition for the .220 yards Wellington Provincial Championship, which resulted in a win for It. Healy, with B. C. I'reyberg second. • The' first mile raco ever held by . the club took place during the-' Reason, ' and -resulted in . a n for E. Murrell,' with B.; C. Frey'jcrg second, ; and W.' C. Morpeth'third;' Hie number of entries was the largest ttyat a mile event has ever drawn in Wellington. The ,polo division showed great; improvement, 'and" was. successful, in drawing with the winners of the banner, the, Thorndon Club, wlio are coin-' gratulated on . their, win. i. ■ -\ Owing chiefly, to .-.the club's treasurer, Mr. W. C. Morpeth','a life-s'aving branch has been formed by the club.: Classes for land drill have been held during the winter in the Y.M.C.A. room, and now .that the -summer is rapidly 'advancing, it is hoped to . hold frequent and .regular.'classes- at,the baths for the jpracti■il. work' of the branch. ''It 'is worth noting that members paid in subscription and entrance fees £43 lis., and received in : trophies £45 12s. Evening races .were held regularly at the baths during, the season, in addition to the carnival. ;-.The number of entries received for these weekly races amounted to 355 (as against 149 for the'.previous year),'while, the carnival attracted 410 entrants (as; agaiust. 324 at tho 'former, carnival). The value of trophios won during,the season amounted to £45 125,, there being 43 prize-winners.' , The figures for the previous year wore: Prizemoney,) £23 3s„ distributed 24 successful competitors;. :
THORNDON CLUB. On Monday next the fourteenth, annual mooting of the Thorudon Club will be held; The.credit balance,tafter.deductings all expenses,' - amounts to £27 lis. lid., of 'Wliich £24 Bs. 7d. was carried forward from, last season. In regard to. races, member? were : treated, liberally, and the Sir J. G. Ward-Chal-lenge Cup_. was - again competed for, the winner: being 0; Brice, ft young swimmer, who has. mad-n good progress 'during the, past .twelie^months;; lie polo teara,_whioh' suoceeded, in 'winning the championship, shoved great'; improvement in form. : Tie annual carnival took the form of a night gala, and drew record entries, i During the season Mr. jj; H'. M'llroy resigned the position of secretary, and Mr. C. Mac Donald was apppinted-to.fill the position. Mr. J. Nelson resigned his - position- as comduring the season, on account oflliis removal from Wellington.
