Congress is conducting an inqwry into the electionof Senator Lorimer,- an Illinois Republican, who is to have obtained his seat by 1 bribery, ..and with whom Mr. Roosevelt a ' few ' Weeks ago. refused to .sit at a. .Evidence was given' that', as .much as 2500. dollars was paid for-a single' vote in support of Mr. Lorimer. : ' Following .the publication, of, charges affecting the election.last year.of, Senator Lorimer, of Illinois, three Democratic members of the Illinois Legislature were recently indicted. ■ Mr. Lorimer, a Republican, was. elected. by the votes of tifty-five ■ Republicans • and-,-., Democrats. The first confession was made in. May by. Charles A. White, a Democratic member of the House, ,who said in 'a sworn statement that he was paid 1000 dollars by the Democratic- leader in the House to vote for Lorimer, and also that at the end of the session, in July of 1909,' he received 900 dollars : from Robert E. Wilson, of Chicago, another Democratic member,. as his Mare of - the "jackpot," a general corruption fund distributed at the time of adjournment. The matter was at once taken up by a special grand jury.- Subsequently; other confessions wore made.

Mr. Roosevelt will go on the stump for the . party during the Congressional campaign. ■ Mr. Henry Lewis Stimsoh'is a lawyer, ii years of age. Ho came into. some prominence last year as the prosecuting attorney in - the case against the United States' Sugar Trust. From 1006 to 1909 Mr. Stimson was United States Attorney for the Southern District of Now York. Mr. Roosevelt himself was previously mentioned as a possibility for the Governorship of' New York.
