THE MUNICIPAL ORCHESTRA.

■ GOOD YET POPULAR MUSIC. . • Now that'the way is dear for the establishment; of a municipal orchestra in Wellington, Mr. J. Matighan Barnett, to .whom is due the credit for the idea as far as . Wellington is concerned, is losing no time in arranging matters. Unfortunately the delay caused by op 7 position to the scheme has delayed- the formation of the orchestra until what is regarded as the.concert season is. all'-,but over, ; Mr. Barnett. hopes, however, to.be able to arrange at least-, two concerts before the year expires. • Talking over the character of'the musio .to be played at; these concerts,. Mr. Barnett said he did not consider it' advisable to 6cl<ct the more difficult worts for a start, but still good', music would be euro to -be popular. He thought. that ho might rehearse, such works as the ballet musio from Massenet*s"Le Cid" (whioh, by the way, charmed everyono at the Exhibition), the popular prelude to the third act of TLohengrin" (Warner), and one of the slow movements of Beethoven; Such music 1 would be quite enjoyable to all tastes, and would serve to whet . the musical appetite for"! what. will- come later; The. programme would be varied; perhaps, by the introduction of a violin solo and one or two organ pieces.
