WIRELESS PROVES USEFUL. - A remarkable'ihstanco, of the usefulness ot wireless telegraphy was afforded by the ftord Deutscher Lloyd steamer Kocnigin Louise, which lost her-starboard'propeller on June 27, on the way. from Bremen to : New, lork. The. accident was caused- by the engmeß racing, in the'high seas that then prevailed. As soon as the accidenthappened, Captain Haraseawitz communicated tho.information: to the Nord Deut-: scner Lloyd In Bremen by wireless "telegraphy, and tho ship proceeded on her: voyage to New York by means of only onei propeller. She averaged a speed of-eight' to nine knots, and occasionally,' when the wind was favourable, she made as, much as twelve, knots per hour, arriving.at New' rork only two days late. Owing to' the difficulty, of navigating the crowded waters ot Now York Harbour, she was assisted tugs to her berth at Hobokon. On July i.the steamer was taken to.one of the naVy dry, docks at Brooklyn, where she was carefully,, examined and repairs taken in, hand. This work was completed m just under five days'. On July 8 she was taken.back to her berth at Hoboken' for loading, and on July 9 sailed for Genoa, according to time-table. The promptitude with, which these .repairs were carried out was- entirely owing to the can/ tain being able, to communicate by wireless :telegraphy with the head office of the company in Bremen, on receipt of whioh information they at. once caused a new propeller shaft and propeller to be : made i and sent over to New York by the express steamer Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, which arrived thero on "July 6, two days later than tho Koenigin Louise. Had it not been- for.. tho: use : of wireless telegraphy th«.company, would not have received any report of the. mishap' until the steamer's arrival at New York, in'which case the steamer would have been detained-in Now York for. at least from ten to twelve days.
