After / that period tho technically-trained •man begins to learii 'how to apply his -kftowledgo .in.practical ways.and Jiow to curb.an over-developed love of .abstract 'knowledge as distinct from that Which ia ; immediately useful.' The reaction :exein-■ phfied bynMr,: Crane illustrates'one economic weakness of much of our higher education, viz., its failure to. direct the enthusiasm of tho student' towards the ultimate-practical purposes of knowledge rather than to its 1 mere, acquisition.
