Of tho balance (.£321 3s. 9d.), ,175 had been earmarked for, new artesian: .wells., / .The balance .left -was only .£l4O for .working expenses for the year:-: The-coirimittee're-'! .'commended that the attention of the engineer in charge .of tho water works !bo directed to this. Under the heading of drainage! .£155 'had been provided for .the Middlemarch drain;. £157 '7s. Ud. had been spent to - date, - and £32 125.-3d.v.on the Willoughby ICnight drain, which was an extension,of this work.! A sum of £23 Bs.. sd. had also been spent on flushing., the western side sewers, £120 had been provided for in the estimates for clearing creeks, and a sum of £103 lis. had been' expended: This left only a small margin for any further cleaning before the end of . tho financial year. Generally speaking, it wpuld bo found necessary tc ob-. serve : economy in order to wind up the year within the estimates. ■ ;. . ~ A report by the engineer (Mr. RixTrott) on . the progress ,of a -number of borough works was adopted. ' Councillor! Barlow gave notice to move at next meeting that in view of a move being made in Wellington to do away with the/ I'e Aro station, this council enters its emphatic protest against the movement. • . The Wellington Touring Club will open thoir season on October .1. Tho annual meeting of the Wellington Wednesday. Cricket Association will bo held at the New Zealandor Hotel on Monday, "October 3, at 8 p.m. An imperative clearing sale of drapery, owing. to dissolution in partnership will bo held by Messrs.
