THE UNITED STATES' CROP YIELDS.
BIG INCREASES AND A SERIOUS 'SHORTAGE. * ißccord-breaking yields of corn and oats in the United States of America are in sight, as viewed by the Aigust orori report of tlio. U.S.-. Department of Agriculture. Tlio loss in corn during July was sharp, mounting up to an estimate of 220,000,000 bushels, but nevertheless the present promise is for a yield of 2,940,000,000 bushels. This would be 13,000,000 in excess of- tlio. greatest harvest, which was the crop of 1906. '.Oats are ahead • practically the .same number of bushels of, the greatest crop ever harvested of that grain, tho figures now standing at' 1,022,000,000 bushels.". Last year ; -this crop crossed the billion-bushel line for the first time. Drought loss in tho. North-west reduced an oats ■ yield : that would have been phenomenal. Thresher returns in nearly " all. section's indicate fine quality and heavy weight * of grain..' ..: It is; feared .that, corn figures will bo further revised downward before harvest. Estimates which deal only- with, acreage and.'fail',to:.take;/account. :of; poor stands and spotted conditions of fields are ,misleading.. There are /few sections in ~which general, heavy - rains '. would not' be welcomed; in some they are; 'essential. to. ; the manuring , of.-, the. crop. '. And. the - belated crop must \ run the. frost gauntlet,' brought to mind by reports of frost' already in Alberta. :■ While' winter wheat has yielded 1 surprisingly, . the . tremendous loss in ' the North-ivest brings the. total . production, to Van -estimate; of ;-'060,000,000-bushels.' Nevertheless.' this/yield '/with ./reserves will, require ah' export market, in-' addition. -ito domestic consumption.- ' //' i .i! The'chief minor/items are a//three-, fourths' crop/ of potatoes, and a sensational -doss/in hay. ' Tho promise is. for. only' 5^,000,000, tons,. ant! pastures are. almost' universally/ short;;■ and have' been J for 'weeks. There was a 'shortage of ■6,000,000 tons of. hay. last" year, and now there 'is a deficit of nearly 11,000,000 tons from that. reduced figure.;'. Along with parched, pastures, necessitating. heavy inroads on cultivated 'crops for ( sustenance in. . mid-, summer, ; it; is/ the ..most '/./disheartening' feature'/ of. /the ' year's agriculture.; in , the fStates. .// ..I
