A SECRET BURIAL PLACE.
. — ♦ FOUR HUMAN SKELETONS FOUND. (By Telegraph;— Special Correspondent.) • Auckland, September 23. An interesting, although, somewhat .gruesome, find was made by the work-: men who are road-building cfn the Victoria Estate at . the terminus of the Mount Roskill tramway. On breaking down somo rock from, a small cave on the property the skelotons 'of four human beings, two male and two' female, were found. s The remains bear the appearance of J being very old, and evidently are of the Maori race, the skulls being particularly thick, and what teeth remain are in excellent preservation.. It is quite possible that the roof of the cave the ' remains were found has. fallen in somewhat, for the space they were in was hardly s a couple of. feet •in depth, and probably was a secret burial place. At a meeting of the Waratah Second Search Committee, held in Melbourne oil September IG, tho Lord Mayor said that the cominitteo had paid £2500 to tho owners-of tho Wakefield in London, and £3000 to tho owners' local re-, prosontatives. There was £2076 10s. in the bank to tho credit of tho fund, which was about £833 loss than the amount claimed by the owners, to be still duo to them. Tho committee, however, disputed somo' of the items in tho owners' statement of claim, r It was decided that the committee should offer the owners £2076 as full settlement of thoir claim. Failing tho acceptance of that offer, a sub-commit-tee was formed for tho purpose of going thoroughly into the claims made, with the; assistance of tlio Crown solicitor.
