LOOSE WIRING
"STANNOS" .SYSTEM-CONDEMNED. : . ■ For- some months past'there has been of tali about a .cheaper method of firing houses . for ■ electric light .than that which at present obtains. The system, whioh has ,been suggested as possible .for.- adoption in Wellington, :is called the/"Stannos" system. ■;'The council of the New Zealand Underwriters' Association hare not looked - with a. favourable eye on 'this . system, but- have now decided to allow, its 'introduction subject to the following condition:—"(l) Sub-circuit' wiring from -the-*' secondary of a double wound transformers for voltages up to fifty (50), V using ■ the outer sheath as the earthed return conductor and all standard fittings. (2) Sub-circuit wiring for isolated plants—D.C. or A.C., up tp 50 volts, using all outer sheath as the earthed return and all standard fittings. • (3) Sub-cirjuit 'wiring up- to 240 volts only, and if same ; conditions as Gergmann tubing is now .allowed, U6ing 'outer sheath as mechanical protection. Two single wires,, or 1 one .twin' wire for D.e.;,twin wire_only for A.C." '•■"-"■ As this condition entails- a- cost just as great as the present system, an. economic advantage has no ■ existence. Mr. C. A. Ewen, of the' Wellington Underwriters' Association, condemns the "Stannos". system as unsatisfactory. "After careful consideration, strength, ened by expert opinion," says Mr: Ewen; "I am quite satisfied that the system, is cheap and;nasty, if it is not actually dangerous. 'Stannos*. is- the recognised name of the goods of a certain company, and , therefore the Underwriters' Association should not be asked to sanction the wires'of ona compsjiy, as against, those of other companies./. The City Council, which wants, to sell as much current as possible,. and the Underwriters' Association view the matter from altogether dif. | ferent- joints: of yfaw.? '.
