A'DISTINGUISHED CHURCHMAN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. London, September 19. ; The death is announced'of tho Most Rev. Dr. Maclagan, late Archbishop of l'ork. SOLDIER AND MINISTER, The following announcement was made in the "Court Circular" of October 31, 1908:- . , ....... -'■ ■ / "The King this afternoon received; in audience the Archbishop of York (upon his . resignation of tho.Seo of York).'' . •Dr. Maclagan intimated'his intention to resign, in a'.letter to the clergy of his diocese. In this lie referred to his "seventeen years-of happy, work and fellowship," and; added that "this step is the result of long and prayerful consideration." He felt that in his eighty-third year he ought to surrender , the helm to younger and perhaps a more active man, giving himself up.to a life,of quiet preparation for the world to come. The resignation took effect at.' tho. end of, 1908, when he was succeeded , by' Dr- Cosmo Lang. It was, in 182G, on the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo,, that "Williain Dalrymple Maclagan was born in Edinburgh. "That was a great , birthday," said an old soldier to tho child's father (Dr. David Maclagan, Physician to the Forces, who served in tho Peninsular War). "You must ,make a soldier pf him;" . , / "But it was-a, ijunday," said the nuTse. "He'ought to be a minister/' ' The infant lived to.'please both, the future Archbishop being a soldier before lie ..took holy; orders., He joined .the Army' when, quite a lad, and served for some years in the., Madras Native Infantry, re-tiring-as lieutenant in 1852. .. Eeiproceeded to' St.- .Peter's College,' Cambridge, ana, was ordained 'in- ISSG, commencing chial, work, as curate of ' St., Saviour's, Paddiugton. /. . After/two' years'■ experience, at 'St. Stephen's,Marylebone,-to. which he transferred his', ministrations in 1858, he was invited-, to undertake tho'duties of secretary; to! the London : Diocesan. Church Building Society.:/ He displayed during his- five:years' tenure iof this office those exceptional powers of administration ana organisation for. which he was alwaysnoted., ■'■ He was . subsequently curate-in-.chargo . of. Enfield, rector' of. Newingtori,and vicar of Kensington. :/ The great Bishop Selwyri (formerly of New; Zealand) died in 1878, and Dr.. Mac-, lagan wasvch'osenr to succeed him in the historic See .
