He felt that in his eighty-third year he ought to surrender , the helm to younger and perhaps a more active man, giving himself up.to a life,of quiet preparation for the world to come. The resignation took effect at.' tho. end of, 1908, when he was succeeded , by' Dr- Cosmo Lang. It was, in 182G, on the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo,, that "Williain Dalrymple Maclagan was born in Edinburgh.
