"PLAYING THE CAME." A LIVELY CAMPAIGN. The £2000 mark, has now been passed, and the committee has, entered hopefully on tho third lap. Tho collqctors report that they havo every-' where been pleasantly received, and that even when only a .small subscription, or no subscriptions at all, has been given, kindly approbation-has . invariably been expressed regarding the work and aims of the institute. This afternoon the Rugby Union, has granted the eoihmitteo permission to "pass the ball" among the spectators at 'the Athletic Park., A collecting-box, in the form of a full-sized football, will be passed from one to another, and all present will be given an opportunity to "play the game." "Passing the ball" is a game specially copyrighted by the institute. It is becoming _ a favourite pastime, notwithstanding that it costs each player one shilling at least each time he plays. . Next .Wednesday the children of the Mount Cook Schools, to the number of one - hundred and fifty, will give, in the Opera House, the. beautiful Japanese operetta, "Princess Chrysanthemum.", ,' Tlie children have been trained to a high pitch, and' give ■ a finished performance. . . Nothing better of the, kind has been , seen in ./Welling-Home-made; will be sold during the evening/by .fair; sympathisers. Arrangements aro well in; hand fpr the' athletic carnival. Major Hume and his committee are leaving no .stone unturned,: in their efforts to ensure its thorough success.' . -- s ' .' ■ The concerts to be- given , by Miss Miles on October 10 and October 11 are also .expected -to: prove/.highly success'-: ful, and! Mr; Newton has -a splendid programme in preparation for the concert to be given in the Town Hall on a date to be announced shortly.
