The Roman Catholic Cathedral fund has now reached a total of .£20,000, which sum has been carefully invested-by-the trustees.' It is now contemplated that the trustees will be in such a position to proceed with the erection of. the first part of the edifice in about two years from now. This is estimated to cost some .£30,000, and it- is hoped to open that section, free of debt. The Cathedral is to be erected on the square, corner block fronting Buekle Street and ;Tory Street, bounded on the east side by St. Joseph's Church and on the north by the playground of St. Patrick's- College. The site is as near as possible in the residential centre of the city.

Replying to ,a deputation which waited upon him yesterday, the Hon. R. M'Kenzie (Minister for -Public Works) stated that the construction of- the proposed. Waiuku railway in the Franklin district would have ■to be deferred for a year or two. Either as a 'Minister or as a private member, he was willing to supnort the construction-of.-the line. The difficulty was that, other and more important lines had precedence. Mr. MKenzie added that he was quite satisfied the' line would,pay, as he had never seen better country and more industrious settlers in ,any .other part of New Zealand. ,

What is evidently the final reply of, the Minister for Railways (the Hon. J. A. Millar) to representations that the railway line should be duplicated between Penrose and in the Auckland district, has been received by Mr. Lang. In the course of his letter Mr. Millar states '"A considerable expenditure has already been authorised at Wcstfield for work that will ultimately form part of. the duplicated line, between Penrosio. and Otahuhu. There is, however, no immediate necessity for the whole scheme to be carried out at present, and in view of the many more urgent and*.important works in hand or, awaiting - funds, I regreK that I cannot .see my 1 way to authorise the • carrying out of the whole scheme at the present time."
