I- Dearest, winner of the .Flying.Hahdicap, looked' all the better for-the racing which she had had ; at; Marton. and' Levm, and she should be : capable of still ■ further iiiiprovement. • • • After his poor showing in the. Hack : Hurdles, veterinary assistance , had' to be obtained for St. Bill," and il was reported that ;he, was -suffering, .from' a slight attack of- paralysis., It is doubtful if he will 6ver race again- • v..' "..VAfter the.'goo'd. form shown by.-Electra4 koff at Marton, . backers would have nothing else for the Flying; Handicaps The Menschikoff pbhy looked light, and moved soratchlly 'in 'his preliminary. One of . the best.looking -of the• field was. the. Multiform colt; Lord"Kelvin,who will im-. prove with the'racing, which he is'-havr ,lng.' Dervish was the'first to-show, out,, and led for about a furlong where Dearfist took, charge, pud Was.: not afterwards headed, winning comfortably by; a length from. Electrakoff, who beat' Lord Kelvin by t head; for, second plaee... Full Cry and Cloudy Morn wero the only withdrawals . from the : WillowbankHack Steeplechase,, eleven starting.' Jlaku was a good favourite.' Whatashot took charge after the first fence was negotiated and jumping cleverly was not afterwards headed. Ho won comfortably by . two lengths froin-Mahara- with Castout and Don Carlos next. Kauroa and' Aesop also completed, the course.- Makn had ruu.from; : sixth to' second; place when a round 'was completed, l but: fie- then. turned • a somersault. Neither horse nor rider . was hurt. Nino of the eighteen acceptors were withdrawn from' the Pukehou Hack' Hurdles. -.St. Bill,'who was: making his.firstappearance in 'a, jumping race,, was'.sent out a- hot. favourite.- Ho was with; the leaders for about a mile, : but then dropped; back, finishing absolutely last. Captain Jingle "also gave a disappointing; disblay, and was beaten at half-way. After shaking'off the two horses named, The Native had charge, aiid finishing well,, beat Mahuta bv a length. Hawick was close up.', St. Tor.ey was a very strong favourito in the Maiden race, and he won froiU end to end, .while Hastwind was always in' second position. The 'VVelllngton-owned r Ahiiapai was .very sore, and could : not. : hit out. with heir usual freedom. < Parawanui, a likely-looking, sort, by Advance, was befriended in some quarters,'but he' is not ready yet. . There were-six runners in the Open Steeplechase, and a lid Sir Lethe divided favouritism.. As-usual the pair raced to the front, and spoilt each other's chance. Nogi was slways handy, and iu the last inilo he. drew out troiu, the field, and won easily;, Lovell. reached badlv for all his fences, and eventually ran olf at the' second fenco from.' home. Sir Lethft ha/J not liiicl a ; jump ?sinte .the Grand National meeting, and he, got in the air at his fences. • . ,| • A protest against 1 the- winner for, allegedly being trained by u disqualified .person was dismissed. " - Electrakelf and -Merrio Zealand were heavily'backed-in the Gorton Memorial Handicap, but both ■ let their backers down. The' I'ufi.ruu representative, ■ St. Felix, looked better than at- any time during his career. .Taking charge, three furlongs from home, he stalled off challenge after challenge, iin(l won "all out" by a length from the littlo-fanci«(l- Roosevelt; lileotrakulf ' was left: badly, and whipped in the field' I,ho whole way. Merrie Zealand was the unlucky horse of the race. Across the bottom stretch he wits on the outside of ioiir horses. Iranui was very sore, -and the others were disappointing. "" On the.track this morning, the Hastings colt -Bunkum ■ had defeated St. Toney in a gallop over four furlongs, and whtii St. Toney won the Maiden event it made Bunkum's performance appear better still. The Merriwee colt .finished iip favourite, *nd he pulled his-backers through quite easily with the unlucky Mediterranean second. Tho-latter gave the-winner- H big'break- in the first, part, and then ran him to a length. His performance, therefore, was a good one.' Of the remainder, Amaru and St, Lumsden. were prominent in the early stages. ;
