A PECULIAR ACCIDENT.

— « : — MR. W. CABLE SERIOUSLY - ' INJURED.'' What can only be described as a peculiar accident, attended, unfortunately, with very serious results to Mr. W. the well-known iron-master, of i. occ uri'ed shortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning opposite the new Corporation carshed in course of erection at th ® far end of Thorndon Esplanade. ' Mr. Cable 111 company , with his son; Mr. Roy Cable, and Messrs. Harris,-Tay-lor,.- and Kirk (employees of the Arm), were motoring into town from Kaiwarra, and coming round the bend across the rails into the Esplanade came in contact with a steel rope, which was stretch--ed across the road just about the level of their heads. The wire caught Mr.-! Cable, senior,' in the face with such force that the jawbone waß broken,, nnd the unfortunate gentleman rendered unconscious. Mr. ■Loy Cable, who was driving; also metthe full force of the wire, and was at first thought to have sustained concussion of the brain. Mr. Harris wab cut about the face, while the other occupants of (the car suffered more or less from shock. ' :

Mr. Cable, senior,: was at once removed to Dr. Anderson's, where his injuries were attended to. - He was then removed to Nurse Wiseman's Private Hospital in Brougham Street, where an operation was performed by Dr. Ewart, who was assisted _by Drs. Clay, and Anderson. The patient recovered consciousness about, half-past two. in the afternoon, and is now doing as well as can be expected from the nature of his injuries. _ Mr. Roy Cable was taken to his home in "-.Levy'-Street, and. is now progressing very, favourably . towards recovery."; It is-expected that he will be'able to get , about in two or threo days' time; Tho, others are also progressing satisfactorily. y . Further inquiries into the - cause of the accident show that one. of the hands employed in the Corporation carshed building operations, was in'charge of a steam- : winch which was stationed on I the - sea- 1 ward side of the road. A steel rope was attached to a derrick on- the. opposite side, and at the time, of the accident the derrick was being hauled across the road by the,winch, the rope being about seven feet above the level the road.
