At present, travelling via Johnsonville, they have to traverse about 12 miles of road, in order to reach the city. There is a possible route of only about half this length, but it involves the construction of a tunnel through the range that 'bounds the OhaTiu Valley. This, it was until recently thought would have to be about fifteen chains in length, but the latest obtained report states that a thirty-chain tunnel would be required. The estimated' cost of construction is £1000 per chain, £30,000 in all. Construction of the shorter' tunnel would have involved, it is estimated, the imposition of a, threefarthing rate on the settlers concerned, and the additional cost now stated to be necessary practically puts the proposal out of court for the timo being. Ultimately it is believed the Ohariu Valley will bo utilised for residential sites. At present, it has a population *( only about 300 souls.
