The freight cars wore dropped into the.sea in an effort to lighten .the sinking vessel, and the Pere Marquette's own lifeboat- saved forty-five.persons. .
One lifeboat. from a • rescuing ferry boat was crushed against the side of its own boat, with the result that two men were drowned.
There are a number of car ferries named .the Pere Marquette belonging to the Detroit Steam Boat Company. They are twin screw steel vessels of, from 2000 to 3000 tons, gross.
