The treatment the "Wairarapa ' district, has; suffered at the hands of.; the ■ Minister for. Railways, is referred.- to. by. the "Wairarapa Daily. An important business transaction has just been completed-per medium of Mr. A. Simmoudsj on account of Mr. Gi H. Cranby (writes our .Napier correspondent). Mr. Simmonds sold the Clarendon Hotel, a freehold property, to Air. W. Reading, of .the Trocadero. The new proprietor takes possession on March 2nd next. The price was. in the neighbourhood of £10,000. Mr. Reading's business has been purchased by Mr. Youngsou, of. Palmerston North, who 1 will take possession in the course of a week m* two.
A notice in regard to life-saving appliances for ships.-.' appears in this week's "Gazette." It states that uovwithstanding anything contained in the rules relating to life-saving appliances, dated July 8, 1903, and November 3, 1909, it shall be permissible in the case of such' passenger or emigrant steamships as are required by the rules dated July 6, 1903, to carry, eight or more boats placed under davits, for boats, not exceeding- in all one-fourth of the number required by "'the.'rule's to be placed under davits, to ba carried inboard, provided that each boat carried inboard is stowed alongside a boat which is .placed directly/under davits, and is so arranged that it can .be launched promptly. -A boat which is: carried inboard under this: rule need not .be always attached to the davit.tackles.
■No news has'been received from Mr. Stead, of Christchurch, since he' Undertook his voluntary search for the''rare and infrequent huia in the Rangitikei Ranges, nearly a fortnight ago. .This is not surprising, as'the region visited is extremely wild and inaccessible, and the only communication possible would .be if. the searcher and Iris party, of Maori, guides had reached a sheepstation way back. Another week will have to elapse before Mr. Stead is due back' to civilisation. ;.
