A DANGER.
vTEACHERS AND UNIVERSITY '',;.; \~v \ DEGREES. .'"There seems still to be a'dange*, that some of the students may subordinate their legitimate training as teachers to the object of taking a university degree," considers the Minister for Education ru a refeieuce in his annual re-, port to Paihament to the work of tho teachers' training colleges. "It does not seem expedient, m the interests of .the, efficiency of the teaching profes- •' sion in the Dominion, to shoiten the regulai two-years' couiso of training, except in the caso of those who have" already graduated m the University, and who may therefor bo considered as requiring only professional training ;in.the colleges, l'or them one jear vvould, piobably bo sufficient. There is, of-course, no desire to cut off any suitable 'students from tho pursuit of a university course; but, atter all, the training colleges to tram teachers for their professional work, and, it is hot desirablo to confuse tho aims of a training college with thoso of a uni- > versity college " t : ."Apparently," further btates the Minister,: "tliero are a certain number.: of..parents who think that it is sufficient for a girl to have little more than half the amount of schooling that 'a boy receives Attention was called to this fact in last year's report. Homo reasons no doubt account for some gases; but' probably tho chief cause is the '.'.thoughtlessness of patents who consider-education less important for girls 'than foi bojs The obvious remedy would appear tq be a stricter enforcement of the attendance sections of the Act.:' There would bo less excuse, however, for thoughtless parents who withdraw' their girls too soon from 1 school* attendance if it was an established practice m all schools to give practical*domestic instruction to the older girls.".
