'~,:: What was once a fine sailing vessel trading to these shores from different parts of the world—the barque Ganymede—is now lying quietly in the'waters of Port Nicholson Harbour, converted into a hulk. This fine old "windjammer" finished her last voyage yesterday morning, when she arrived from Dunedin in tow-of the U.S.S. Company's steamer Kouiata. Both vessels left. Dunedin at 6 a.m. on Sunday last, meating with, a stiff northerly, .which prevailed for tho whole of the 360 miles traversed. . The voyage was bare of any escit-' ing incidents except tho fact-that the vessels occupied only-two days live hours, from port to ; port, which is considered vory good going. . . The Ganymede is'.described: a 6 a very ssrviceable-looking- hulk, with: four hatchways, each capable of discharging.lß tons per hour or 72 tons all told when working four gangs. She is-capable of.holding 1000 tons, and is. specially fitted with four powerful steam winches. ... When the hulk came alongside the Railway Wharf she was boarded by a reporter, who' found , the members of the crew in different states of dress 'or undress preparatory'to going .ashore to "sign off." Some, were packing up, .and altogether things were a "little out of place'."- .One member of the crew, who was jambing clothes into a canvas hold-all, in answer to a query Baid, "Oh, yes, jolly glad to get here, but ,we have had a real good trip up." Then a pair of tan shoes disappear: e"d into the canvas bag.' "Yes," said another, "when she was in dock at \ Port Chalmers I had a look at her and fonnd her as good as tho' day she was built." ; The largo bedroom for the hulk-keeper (it was once- the captain's cabin). makes a capital apartment! In fact, the living quarters on board are very "well got up. The occurrence, will.still be remembered in connection with the transformation of tho Ganymede to a hull; when Mr. W. Clements was fatally scalded by tho safety valve, on tho boiler, suddenly .being-blown off its "seat." He went down from Wellington to Dunedin to, take charge of the vessel for her owners, Messrs. J. Mill and Co., :-,- •.-■•■.■-,'■-. Captain M'lntyre, who brought the Ganymede up from.the southern port, is well known in' shipping circles in. Wellington, he having been on the steamer ■ Wakatu some time back trading between Lyttelton and Wellington. There are only ono or two necessary alterations, to be' made before, the hulk frill'-be ready for receiving her first -"cargo.". The s.s. Defender is advertised to . Bail for Hokitika direct,to-day, at 3 p.m.:' Messrs. Eassori,- Ltd;,-are at present loading, the steamers: Wooion, Arapawaj and Wairau at Haveloek with; timber, for Wellington.
