Backers of the favourite, Penza, had the , best of matters when the.first race was run. Penza got chopped out badly at the start, but she was soon in front, and led froin her stable-com-panion, Mediterranean, at the turn. Hers the field swung' wide, and 'Tina Toa slipped up on-the rails. When the favourite had disposed of him, Prancer appeared on the outside, and in a sensational finish, Deeley's mount, Prarioer, was only defeated by a head. . ■■■ The success of the .favourite..in the opening event emboldened backers to ligain take the short price on offer in the next event.. This time their choice ivas Multiple, who had-Jenkins in tho saddle. , ( Nothing else came in for any support,' and, despite the mud, backers .would "not hear of the defeat of .the Multiform . horse. -' The start. was a good one, and the favourite was first out, but was- immediately'supplanted by Kareroa, who. led' down the back. Across the bottom- Multiple" was. again out by himself, and he was not again headed, winning comfortably by two lengths. .Dervish was a-length in .front of Kareroa, , . and Tanekaha was nest. .;■ :' .;. -' ' • ■■' ■■',■■•■ ■' . ...
■ In the Maiden .Plate, backers plumbed.for the Forirua filly, Dearest, while Vibration, who has shown 'winning form,, was-nest,in demand. .', A slight bustle took placei;,at the baTrier, due to Lord' Kilcheran's front; legs becoming looted in V.ama!s bridle.:. ; When ,they were / disentangled. and the jockeys 'remounted, a good start-was etfectedj and immediately Vibration' and- Dearest .went'-to the front.,' Lares, ran upV at the .turn, but -could not' sustain .'his. run. Vibration was then 'challenged by Merry ■Frank, but;, he s stalled ..■ the challenge off, and won by a neck','with Varna clear of . : the" : rest of the -field.. .The;winner's rider lost both irons soon after the start, but : : he was able .to weigh in correctly.
