MOVING TOO FAST.
Sir,—l noticed in a paragraph' last week where sonic ' person made a'comparison that then) were more alums in Wellington than in Auckland. This statement is ridiculous. . Wellington is cleaner and a healthier city than Auckland has ever. been. The- buildings aro superior and in better repair." Travellers who aro" full .of marvellous ideas of English cities, seem .to, forget that Wellington is only tho ago of.an ordinary man's life. Thoy come here with a flourish of trumpets,' and want to condemn, and pull down, : everything and anything that offends .their .globed trotting eye. ...They, seem,.', to ' lorgirtV that this', country had;to he built,.up' by struggling people, who,,had toTface many difficulties in' the early" days!. In this city at the present, timoanany of our old settlers have been jostled out* of good positions by' "newcluiips". from Homo, who have had political .'influence, and by parson deputations waiting on tho Government on,' their behalf. Some of these early, settlers aro dependent only upon the, little properties tbey havo got together in the past, and they are quite satisfied with' thoir surroundings, and our highblown globe-trotters tell us. we have' to pull everything down. ~ Thero is no consideration for the. landlord iand tho widow and family who are dependent upon their little hit of property; but, : of course, 1 as it • offends the eye of the; gontleman who has'been trotting round the globe,. it must'be demolished. Now, some.of the old houses that wore built in. the early, days aro in far, better state .of preservation than, houses that have been built in recent times. In' tho olden times only the best, of timber, was used.' I saw'ah old house pulled down the other day, anil it was in a splendid state of preservation.. It is all.very well*te,attempt toi.wipe-.6ut, everything in one. act, irrespective of! consequences.—l am, etc.,.' '.['."" .;■.,identity,.;,..
