Frnscr, who recently sold his tobacconist's business here, has established a similar business in Patea. | The new dairy factory at. Carrington will probably be ready for operations at the beginning of October. • Tho licensed victuallers of the Wairarapa, have (through Mr.-W. M. Halley) presented a beautiful solid silver chal- ! lenge cup to the Wairarapa and East 1 Coast P. and A. Society, for competition lon points in' the cheese classes. The I trophy is on view liero. Mr. S. Cranch, of Belvedere, has.pur--1 chased a farm property at Te Aroha, in tho Auckland province, and has • left to take it over. Mr. A. E. Wallis, the contractor for removing the old wooden portion of tbe South Wairarapa Hospital, is making good progress with the work. Mrs. Tilson,. wife of Mr. It. Tilson, a well-known and highly-respected settler of Ponatahi, "died on Monday evening. The funeral is to take place at Greytown on Wednesday.

There were only three dissentients •to the . proposal. . Several ministers were here yesterday in connection witn Native church matters. It is the intention of the local Natives to. lay a protest before them regarding the trustees of the college charging' for children attending the. Native school here. . ' ' . FEILDING. ■ Mrs. J. Graves, wife of one of the oldest" settlers of the Halcombe district,and' sister of Mrs. Peter Thomson, of Feilding, died this week. The deceased lady was widely known throughout the district as one of "our pioneer settlers. She was' 73 years of age. Mrs. Wratt, wife of Mr. J. Wratt, of Taonui,-. has also just passed away. ; Dr. Frengley, district : health officer, was in I'eilding yesterday, and made an inspection of the borough's septic tank system. , ■' Although'defeated by last year's champions (tho Druids) by 22 games to 18, tho: Oddfellows are the winners of the friendly societies' card shield, 1 having' won ,7} 'games.. The Druida won (ii. and .tho I'oresters 4. ■' 'Mr. D. H. Guthrie, M.P., has not yet given up hope of having Bartholomew's liush acquired for. the use of\ the public, and is taking .active steps to' this end.
