: METHODS AT HILLSIDE W0RK- ..... SHOPS. Attention'Mvas drawn by Mr. Arnold, M.l\, in the House of Representatives yesterday to a complaint in the Dunedin "Star" that a system of driving the men had been introduced at the 1 Hillside Railway Workshops. It was alleged, ho said, that men were put on heavy wagon work in 'teams, and pitted against each other. Wagons had now' to bo built from start to finish in less than 20 hours, and an attempt was being mad-e to have them turned out in twelve' hours. If one swt' of men happened to finish' their . job a little after the others they were asM for a reason. ' It wa« also stated, MrArnold added, that the condition of the men at the end of the week was beyond, description. The Hon'. J. A. Millar said' that the paragraph was information to him. He knew of nothing that'-had been ..done to alter the, system there, or of the introduction of the "teams" system. He might say that he did not approve of it. He expected-his officers-'to get a decent day's work for a dtcent day's pay. Full inquiry , would be made into the whole matter. Mr. Davey: Are they on piecework? Mr, Millar: No, on day labour.
