'. MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTION. Nine candidates hive definitely an« nounced themselves for the Council by-election, but only one of t.;em, Mr. J,. B. Speed, has as N yet been'fontolly nominated. There is plenty of time for that yet, as nominations arc- receivai.-'.e by Mr.-James Ames, the. returning offcer,'. until noon next Friday. . Mr. S. Nathan, whose name as a probable candidate has previously been mentioned, has', definitely, decided to stand. ' Tn6 Candidates ut present in tho field are:—Messrs. James Speed, W. H. P. Barber, E. TV. J.' Coleridge, James Godber, H. H. liayivard, S. J. Moran, W." G. Thompson, V. Jensen, anu S. George Nathan.- It is expected that a couple of Labour-candidates will, also come out. . There are two vacancies, one being caused by the death of Mr. J. J. Devihe and the othqr by tho retirement of Mr. T.Ballinger. ;Tho election takes place on Thursday, September. 8. . A supplementary electors' roll has been prepared, and is. being printtd;- It.contains only about three ur four hundred names.. Many additions were, 61 course, made to the roll a few months ago on tho occasion of the Mayoral election.
