An "At Home." A most enjoyable "at homo," given principally for the members of tho Upposition side of the House and their wives," was held by Mrs. Newman at her homo m Ilobson Street yesterday afternoon. It really needed the sight-of .spring flowers, narcissi and anemones, that decorated the rooms and the tea-table, to remind the guests' of tho fact that spring was supposed to be here, so bleak and cold was the day outside. Songs and recitations added to tho enjoyment of the afternoon, among' those contributing boing Mrs. Hadfleld, who sung, and Mr. Manders, who recited. Mrs. Newman wore a graceful dress of pastel blue cloth. Among the guests were Mr. Massey, Mr. and Mrs. Hemes, Mrs. Herdinan, Mr. and Mrs. Hardy, Mr.'and Mrs. Manders, Mrs. Menzies, Mrs. von Haast, Mrs. G. Fell, Mr. and Mrs. Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Nosworthy, and Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm. -
A'pnual Choir Social. Tlie fifth annual social.of St. John's choir was held , in the New Century Hall on Friday evening, and a very pleasant evening was spent by everyone. The hall was gaily decorated with flags, and the stage was furnished with chairs and couches, and decorated with palms and pot-plants. Songs were sung by' Misses Duttrinut, Miss Jameson, Mr. Dwan, and Mr'. Foote. The supper-table was prettily decorated with spring flowers, some of those piosent wcro Miss Jamieson, wearing a white charmeuse satin, with jewelled trimming; Miss M'Kay, mauve chiffon over silk; Miss O'Donoghue, cream emniro dress, with pearl trimming; Miss Delaney, cream satin, with gold trimming; Miss Webb, pink silk; Miss Murphy, blue velvet dress; Miss Coleman, white taffetas silk dress; Miss Lr. Falherty, white silk; Miss Warrington, white chiffon taffetas. , For St. Alban's Church. A vory enjoyable dance and euchro party 'was given in St. Mark's Schoolroom Fast Friday ovening, for the purpose of supplementing tho funds of St. Alban s Church, at Eastbourne. The committee are to be congratulated upon providing such a pleasant evening's entertainment, for the numerous friends who were present. The net result of the evening totalled £% arid this, with contributions of £2 from Mrs.,H. Curtis, and .£1 from Mr. Broman, makes .£l2 in. all to be handed to' the church trustees. A Vacant Position. : Nineteen applications have been received for the position of principal of tho Wanganui Girls' College, including several from Australia. The applicants for Miss Eraser's position include a number, with very fine credentials and attainments, and the Board of Governors will liavo'no «isy task before them on Monday next in making a selection.
Lady Islington, accompanied by Lady Beatrice Clark and Miss Cotton, visited the Parliamentary library, yesterday, afternoon.'.-' ■
Mrs Tregcar left Wellington on Friday for Marlborough, where she will spend a few weeks .with her daughter, Mrs. Robinson. v ,'.- '.■

• A fancy-dress ball in connection with the midwinter assemblies is to. bo held in tho "kiosk" at Worser Bay, on Wednesday, August 31, and on iriday an "at home," taking tho form of a dance will also be held.
A dance, arranged by those engaged in the Barnsbury Bookbinding, Printing and Publishing Works, was held in the New Century Hall last evening. Ohe hall had been brightly decorated with Hags ot various colours, as well as the supperroom upstairs, where the tables were arranged with spring flowers and foliage. The committee consisted of Miss Wilkinson, Miss Chinchen, and Messrs. J. Hereuson, G. Lechncr, A. E. Lankshear, A. Gillies, and P. Carolane (secretary as well) Some of those present were Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Chinchen, and Miss Chinchen, Mrs. Kichardson, Miss Wilson, Miss Pitcher, Mrs. Barcham, and the Misses Barcham (2), Miss Carolane, Miss Ferguson, Miss Sinclair, nnd Miss bcott. lhe duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. Carolane and Mr. : Lechner.
Miss Army Castles has quite made up her mind to continue the grand opera career which she has started so successfully under the J. C. Williamson management. Sho is only waiting till the present season finishes in Melbourne to get away to Italy, and settle .down to study in real earnest, and there is little doubt about her ultimate success in her undertaking. .."''■-.
