Yesterday afternoon ' about A o'clock a strange steamer was Eeen malting for tho heads signalling for a pilot. Oil coming close up it was-found Oiat she was the Navarino, 5103 tons, Captain.Semijle, bound from Newcastle to Valparaiso with a full load of coal.- Tho,.vossel left; the Now South. Wnle's port on August 13, passing through Cook Strait about ten days ago;- All wont well until about 700 miles oft tho New Zealand coast, when a'mishap occurred u>.her machinery. Captain Somnlo deemed it advisable, to mako for Wellington to effect repairs. On the trip out fair weather was met with, but on tno run down to port some very bad weather was experienced, the ship getting tho full force of the nalen that have been raging these last; few days. Pilot-Haywood wont-out•-and-* brought tho Navarino into port, dropping anchor In. : the stream at 6.50 p.m. It.is understood that the necessary repairs will; take two or tlireo days to effect. ' "• " Two years ngo tho Navanno visited the Dominion under charter to tho U.S.S. Co., Wellington being, one of her ports of call on that occasion. Strango to relate, tho same vessel on the run from Iqviquc (South America) to Ncwca-stlc, to load for the present voyage, had to make on uii-. expected call at Auckland "on July 31 last to replenish hor bunkers, taking in 300 tons of coal. . ■ , • _ • -TO STOP PROPELLER RACING.. The stopping of the racing of ships' propellers is a question that has exorcised tho minds of marine engineers for many years, and a number of inventions have beon tried without success'- to minimise the' evil. ■ Besides the vibration so anuoying to passengers, the racing-, of. propellers out' of the water often loads to grave accidents. Mr. Felii' Tanner is now on his way to Mclbonrno with iv now invention whi-h he olnims will-solve-the trouble in a simple manner. The invention consists of an electrical contrivance which can be
fitted to the bulkheads of ships, and regulated so that it will shut off steam aa -' soon as the propeller is out of the water.:' . A movable board controls a weight which closes the steam valve automatically when ' tho ship's stern is lifted, and when the vessel is righted tho board swings to its original, position and the steam valvo ia • opened. If a ship is loaded and drawing.: ,27ft. of water tho.adjustment can. be setat, - say, ,15ft., and.as soon aa the ship's. ', storn-rises'to 15ft. tho steam is shut olf and the propeller , cannot race. The 'invention does not Interfere in any way with. " tho working of' the engines, and is the ~ only ono of its kind that controls tho pro- ■ peller under water, A number of pro-. .. minent marine engineers have certified that, the invention is what has been looted for, and Sir. Tanner has it under offer" to Messrs. Howard, Smith, and 00. and ' Denny Bros., of Dumbarton. The Union Company advise that the .' • Tarawera, arriving' from Napier to-day, will not proceed to Lyttclton at 5 p.m., an , was advertised, but will sail to-morrow afternoon at■ 2 o'clock.
