Tho centro of an extensive storm area passed about Cook Strait early on Sunday moraine. Westerly and southerly gales wero reported in most parts oT tho country. Rain and hail fell in many parts, and heavy snow in tho South, and on highor lands in the North Island. Tho winds have decreased to-day. Present indications are for moderate k> strops; southerly winds northward of Hokitika and Lyttolton, and strong westerlies about Foveaux Strait.
