ONE CANDLE POWER.
1 —4 '- ' DIM .MUNICIPAL GAS. ' The burgesses-of Lower Hutt do not appear to be absolutely and unanimously satisfied with" the ttas supplied them from the works of the neighbouring Borough of Petone. The matter was before the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night. , . The Petone Borough engineer \(Mr. Cook), who wrote replying to the council's complaint of the im'purity of the gas and the low pressure of same, said that he proposed to make a scries of tests of pressure throughout the borough to ascertain the cause of the drop in various parts of the'town, and ho would like the council's sanction to remove burners' ot street lamps, whnre necessary,'■ for this purpose, undertaking to make all good, again, and suggesting that the council's fitter should accompany Mar duriiig -the testing. Regarding the iippurity. of tho gas, Mr. Cook 6tated that early in , July an error of judgment was made in changing the purifier valves, the result being that clean gas was made to flow through .a dirty-purifier.' ' '■'..'. ■ Councillor F. de J. Ciere said he had only been using'Hutt gas,for & short time, and it was most extraordinary. He estimated that two large burners in'his house gavo abont as much light as one candle. Ho sincerely hoped that this was exceptional. ' The engineer (Mr. Eix-Trott), said the pressure could bo read in his , ' office at any time. ■ They were supposed to get 2J inches pressuie, but they did not. He would himself go round with Mr. Cook, when the latter made his proposed tests. The council resolved to give Mr. Cook tho permission asked for, and ■ instructed Mr. Bix-Trott to report oh the pressure.
