LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The boycott of The Dominion in -the matter of State advertisements is still in full force. This morning, following our usual practice, we publish at our own cost, in.order that our readers may not bo penalised by the action of the Government, three State advertisements. One of these relates to' alterations in tho suburban railway time-table; another to tenders for the supply of linseed-oil; and the third-is a bankruptcy-notice.- . The postal authorities, advise that, the Ulimaroa, which sailed from Sydney, uAugust 27, is bringing an Australian mail. She is due to reach here Wednesday morning. ' ■
A contingent of Natives, who are interested in the Greymouth Native reserves, are at present on a visit to Wellington., It.is understood that their mission is in connection with the request of the lessees that they should be allowed to acquire the freehold. The visitors have been interviewing the Minister, but the result is not known.
On the jury panel being called over at the Supreme Court yesterday morning, Mr.' W. M. Hannayr Wellington, claimed exemption onithe grounds of his age—over sixty. Mr. Justice. Chapman excused Mr. Hannay from attendance. But fnfr' members -were about the lobbies of tho House- of Representatives yesterday. The Prime Minister, however, was kept very busy, particularly in the morning, when he received four public deputations, besides a largo number of a private character. When the report on tho Chrislchurch police records caso is brought down in the Houso this afternoon it is anticipated that a discussion on thn subject will .take place. The Kilbirnie and Hosencatli Associations are being invited to co-operate with the Hataitai Association. A number of members of Parliament have received telegrams urging them to vote against any proposal having for its object the registration of'those dental students who are complaining at their nonregistration .under-recent legislation affecting tlieir profession. Thos. Finnerty, who was to have been sentenced in the Supreme Court yesterday'for breaking and entering and theft, will be brought before Mr. Justice Chapman this morning. Owing to an attack of influenza, Mr. W. 6. Riddell, S.M;, was unable to take his place on the Bench, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning; and as Mr. AY. R. Haselrinn was still in Palmerston North, Captain Hamuli and, Mr. J. Dunks, J.P.'s presided at yesterday's sittings iind dealt with such cases as enmo within their jurisdiction, while others wore remanded.
' Sir Joseph Ward has accepted an invitation from the Yorkshire Society, of New Zealand to be present at the society's ani.uul dinner, which is to be held at Godber's, on Monday, September 19. Last evening' the Wellington Corporation Tramways Division of -the St. John Ambulance isrigade held an individual competition in ambulance work for a gold medal presented by the City Electrical Engineer, Mr. Stuart Richardson. Out ot ten competitors, Mr. J. C. Coyno was successful in gaining the trophy. Dr. Fell and Mr. Seed undertook the duties of examiners, the former stating that the general work of the men was very creditable. Among those present were the Mayor, Mr. T. M. Wilford, and Mrs. Wilford, Councillors Shirtcliffe and I , letcher. The following officers were elected for tho ensuing session of the .Wellington United I'rienaiy Societies' Council:— President, Bro. A. J. Bennett ■ (l.O.ll.); vice-presidents, Bro. W. H. Wagstatt' (P.A.F.S.A.); committee, Bros. M. F. M'Hugh (U.A.0.D.); H. B. Parsonage (A.0.1' , .), A. Williams (S.D.T.), L. T. M. liodley (1.0.0.P.A.C), G. E. Taylor, (A.0.1 , '.); secretary and treasurer, Bro. .Chas. D. Robertson (Carterton I\S. Council) re-elected. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to retiring officers. It was decided to accede to a request from the N.Z.F.S. Mutual Fidelity Guarantee Association, regarding approaching the Govornment on a matter of interest to societies, and -the president, vice-president, and secretary were appointed the deputation to wait on the Government, at an early date, regarding this matter. A suggestion that an annual picnic should be held met with approval. |. Further additions to the public buildings', at Blenheim was the subject of a deputation from the Blenheim Borough Council to the Prime Minister yesterday. It was stated that if the post office which was seriously inadequate was to be shifted the, council would give'the Government a reservt for the purpose on condition that the new buildings included a: council chamber, three offices, and a strong-room. On the other hand, if the Government did not wish to fall in with the' suggestion the council would sell the section for ..£ISOO. . The Prime Minister said that he was opposed to municipal buildings being attached-to postal buildings; also ho preferred to have the postal offices kept apart from other Government buildings-so as to permit of extensions being easily made. A report would be secured on the matter which would then be considered in connection with the Public Works votes. A meeting of the committee of the Children's Hospital fund is to be held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on-Monday next. The completed totals •of the collections in hand and promised are not yet available, but a total sum of £6700 has been banked. The executive of the Wellington 'SBbys' Institute has issued invitations for a meeting to be held iii Kirkcaldie and Stains' tea rooms on Thursday evening to consider, matters in connection with the extension of the scope of the . institute. A short musical programme and refresh-' ' ments will vary the proceedings. Lady Ward and Mrs. S. A. Rhodes will act as hostesses for the occasion. The Christcburch City Council lasi night negatived a proposal to establish municipal saleyards at bockburn,in place of the present saleyards 'at Addington.— Press Association.
