MISS LENA ASHWELL.
Hiss Lena Ashwell, tho Unglish actress whom the cables say has inaugurated a crusade in- the provinces under tho auspices of the Women's Imperial Health Association, is'well known on the stage of the United Kingdom nnd America. She is the-.daughter of Captain- Pocock, K.N., afterwards, a clergyman in the' Church of England, ■ Cmmda, and 'is asUter of Captain Pocock, an experienced traveller and author. Jliss Ashwell was born on September 28, 1572; was educated at Toronto, Switzerland, and at the Koyiil Academy of Music, London. It was on the ndvico of Miss Ellen Terry, an honorary examiner for the H.A. in elocution, that she abandoned' music for the stags, of which she is now one of England's representative emotional actresses. She mad* her lirst appearance at tho Grand Theatre, Islington, in 1891, and afterwards loured with Mr. George Alexander in "Lady Windcrmere's Fan," and later still with the Dacres (who suicided iu. London , somo years.ago under tragic qjrcumstnnccs). Since then she has made notable successes in' "Mrs. Dane's Defence," "The Mummy nnd tho Hummingbird," "The Diirling of the Gods," "The Shiilamito," and "Diaau of Dobson's." Two years ago she married Dr. Henry J. F. Simpson. . •
