LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION.

QUARTERLY MEETING. A quarterly .council meeting of the council of the Now Zealand Lawn Tennis Association was held last evening, Mr. Malcolm Eoss presiding. Tho Management Committee reported that Mr. G. "N. Goldio's resignation, on tho score of ill-health, from the position of secretary, had been accepted with regret, andjllr. G. A. Hurley appointed in his place. Numerous eulogistic references were made to the manner in which Mr. Goldic had discharged his arduous duties with the utmost benefit to lawn tennis, and it was decided that a letter of appreciation, drawn up by the Management Committee, be presented to Mr. Goldio in the form of an illuminated address. . There was a brief discussion over a proposed amendment to the rules.'providing that; "Every delegate shall vote according to his discretion' on questions upon which he has received no instructions from the'association which he represents. When such instructions have been given each delegate must adhero strictly to his instructions." . ■ ' An amendment was proposed that the motion should read: "Every delegate shall vote according to- instructions received from his .association." Mr. J. W, M. Dart (Wellington) considered that the rule as proposed would be unworkable .uiiless a clause were added providing that intimation of such instructions must reach tho secretary of the New Zealand Association prior to the meeting' at which the instructions were intended to become operative. The chairman could then rulo any departure by delegates from their instructions out of order. Mr. A. Young (Taranaki) said he was altogether against the motion. It was like asking a magistrate or a( judge to give a decision before hearing evidence. A delegate should bo allowed to exerciso his discretion. If necessary he could bo dealt with by his association afterwards. An appropriate commentary upon the matter in hand was supplied by tho action of several delegates, who declared themselves undecided as'to how to vote upon the question at issue. It was ultimately decided that the question bo deferred until next'meeting. The Managomen Committee reported that owing to the 'rapidly-increasing business of the association, it was absolutely necessary that a paid secretary be appointed. Members expressed general approval of tho proposal, but it was. finally decided that' the matter be allowed to stand over in tho meantime. On tho motion of Mr. .Dart, the association expressed its sincere thanks to Mr. Hurley for taking up tho onerous duties of secretary at n time of emergency.
