Comet,, Is to make experiments with.the new kind of propeller. Tho "Comet" is 25ft. long, and beneath her hull on cither, slHo are suspended by;, long steel braces two steel rods.with special flanges like huge aUgcrß, These are 2ft. in- diameter, measured from the periphery of tho curved flanges, and each is 15ft. long. ..Like great gimlets, they revolve in the water by chain gearing, operated by a 25 horse-power engine. Mr. Gauticr says:—"l believe-that this newstylo of propeller, will drive a boat, three or four times as-fast v as the old style on any given horse-power. In smaller models I have built the excessive vibrations which ordinarily is a feature '6f great'spool under high horse-power has been entirely eliminated, and I believe the same will bo true on larger , boats. -' The. reason for, this is that there'-is'no rigid propeller shaft, only the flexible chain,, and there will be no indirect back thrust id my device, as there is in the old-style:-screws." Yesterday Captain Smith, of the Manuka, exchanged, positions with Captain Worrall, of the Navua, .pro. tem. . .
