' PIG BREEDERS-IN PROTEST.,. ', A strong . deputation.-- of JohnsonviQo, pig-breeders, with Messrs. Gay and.Englo; as. spokesmen, waited upon 'the City' Councijlast evening in reference to the. allegations recently made by Mr. P. T.. Moore' as to the manner in which city; refuse is being at present-. collected■': for ' disposal.as hog-feed. , ..■ Mr. Gay said Mr.' F. T.- Moore, ol' Johnsonvillc, took - exception, to, kitchen refuse being Carried in the carts.now-em-.. gloved. He suggested that the City- . onncil should collect and carry the re--fuse instead. Mr. Moore had said that the manner in which the stuff was carried' by the speaker and those ho representedwas . to. the detriment r of. the publio. health. . This .was: a ■ 6light : upon the ■ people who provided it; They asked the. City Council to allow them.the same privileges they had hitherto enjoyed in spite of Mr. :Moore's..protest'. . If the City 'Counoil thought the refuse was not being' removed in .a proper, mariner they had ,by-laws •' and inspectors who could insist on proper-methods. ...:•..',.'.'"' ■'" . Mr. Engle said the .land occupied by himself and-his fellows was'only fit for, pij-farming.' "If the City' Council prevented, them obtaining supplies,- their' livelihood would-be taken away. Councillor Hindmarsh:' Do any of. yoa gentlemen have tbe pigs inspected before, they, are brought to Wellington? . ..- . Mr. Gay: There, is no law to make u» ! have our, pigs inspected, but for any pigf, ; killed the butchers by, whom they, arei'. sold are liable to the Health Department. 1 Councillor .Trevor asked if the flesh and fish utilised as pig feed,wore boiled before being, used. . ■ Mr. Gay:, It is. always cooked before the pigs get.it. >. . . '-■■. Councillor Shirtcliffe said, this Tefuse was being carted at all hours of the day.; He thought 'the hours should be restricted, and special carts. employed. . Mr. Engle said so far, as Johnsonville .pig-farmers' were, concerned,-, their! carts ■ were always out of town before 8.30 a.m..
Councillor Carinichael said this matter; ; had been before the council before; and, had been thoroughly discussed. The stuff, was supposed to oe carried in closed carts. .' - .'■ , ''■ ■'
