A preliminary meeting of those interested in the formation of a hew Zoological Society was held at the Newtown Library last evening. The attendance, though small—something over a dozen being present—was very representative in personnel. Mr. J. Martin presided, and the promoter of the- scheme, tho Kev. J. Craves, outlined ;lns ideas on tho subject. It was suggested that the new Society should foster, in various ways, the study of zoology by holding! regular meetings for the discussion of its various branches, by arranging lectures, and encouraging interest in the subject among school children. It was stated that about fifty persons had signified their intention of joining the society. Mr. Barnes was appointed to act as secretary, with the Rov. J. Crowes as treasurer, pro. tem. It was further resolved, on the suggestion of the Rev. J Crowes, that a.deputation should interview the City Council at an early date to urge upon the corporation tho qualifications, and claims of Mr. L. Bertliij" for a renewal of his engagement as superintendent of tli6 Citizens' Zoological Gardens.

A defcctivo chimney was responsible for an outbreak of fire at 23 C'ourtenay Place, shortly after midday yesterday The building was a fivc-roomed dwelling, owned by Messrs. Dwan Bros., and occupied by Mr. Edward Winter. Portion of the back wall was damaged. There is an insurance of .€350 on the building in the South British office, but the contents are nbt insured.
