THE LATE MR. J. J. DEVINE.
-Before business commenced at tho meeting of the City Council last evening, the Mayor proposed the following motion' in reference to the death of the late Mr. J. J. Devino:— - "That ,this council, expresses its profound ; sorrow at the death of Councillor Devine, and'places-on .record its high, appreciation" of. his faithful and' Zealous service to the citizens as a City Councillor during a .period of eleven years; that the deepest: sympathy of tho members of the council and tho, citizens be extended to tho widow and family in. their.sad be■reavement;, that .a icopy, of the above re-, solution be forwarded to 'Mrs. Devine."' The, Mayor said he had come into contact with Mr. Devine bo'th,in.public and private life, and had;found' him.genial and good-humoured. There was no more fearless critic in -matters affecting' the public weal.. The speaker had seen him exerting all his puwer for what ,ho believed to be right, though standing alone. His death was a, loss to tho city and tho council/ -''■•"..■':'. Councillor Shirtcliffe, in seconding the motion, said Mr.. Devine would'be long and gratefully remembered by. the citizens of Wellington.' Councillor Frost, in a brief sneech of similar import, remarked on thV credit due to Councillor Devino for his services m connection with the initiation of tho .Greater "Wellington scheme. flio motion.was, passed in respectful mlence, the council and ite officers rising to their feet.- ■ . ,
