——<■ . ■. . ■ (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, August 23. 'In tiio Magistrate's Court this morning, before Messrs. James Brown, and J. I'raser; J.P.'s, a young man named ■Arthur Jones was charged with the theft of ,£3 10s. from a storo at Gladstone, and also with being an idle and disorderly person. Evidence was given to the effect that the accused had visited the storo In-question and that, shortly afterwards, the sum of money mentioned was missed from the till. The Bench, however, gave accused the benefit of a doubt in the evidence on both charges, and dismissed the- information. ■ ' '"'.'■' Tho Williamson Company has succeeded in making , such arrangements with _ the Kailway Department as will enable it to roach Masterton by "special" on August 31. The public, will consequently be afforded an opportunity of witnessing tho pantomime "Aladdin." The poll on tho proposal to raise a loan of ,£31,1)00 for the _ extension of tho drainage scheme is to bo taken on September 8. Much interest is being manifested in the question, tho prospects of which are being actively canvassed both for and against. Miss Jessie' M'Gregor, who is a pupil of Mr. Pureell Webb, of Masterton, .was awarded a silver medal for solo singing at the Napier musical and elocutionary contests. ' A team from St. Matthew's Hockey Club will leave for Napier anil Hastings on Tuesday next, to play, a' series of matches in thoso townships. The Wairarapa Egg Circle yesterday dispatched to Wellington twenty-seven crates, containing 59J| dozen eggs. Tbo Suffolk I'unch sire, "Sudbournu Sirdar," has been purchased by Mr. J. V. Kecd, of Masterton. This is the first occasion on which a, sire of this breed lias been placed af'the disposal of Wairarapa breeders. ■ k. '■' A meeting of assembled Native owners of the Waikekeno and To Unuuiiu Blocks was held before the Ikara District Maori Land Board in Mastertou to-day, to consider an application of Mary E. Cameron for a lease of portions of these blocks,There whs a large attendance of Natives, aiid considerable evidence was taken, but ho decision was arrived at. . Mr. James Pauling,, manager of the Jlasterton l''arniers' Implement Co., Ltd., lias "donated £5 55., for competition at the next ploughing matches to bo held under the auspices of the Wairarapa' P. and A. Society. Physical culture classes in connection with the local branch of the Y.M.C.A. were commenced yesterday. The new gymnasium will bo ready for occupation in the course of a few days. The Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society will shortly discuss the question, "Is Compulsory Military Training Desirable?" with the members of the Gladstone Debating Society. Members of the Excolsior hockey team entertained the members of tho team which won the junior championship (St. Matthew's) at. a smoke concert last evening. Various toasts were proposed, and musical items woro rendered. A sitting of the Ikaroa District Maori Lnnd Board was held yesterday, before Messrs. J. 13. Jack (president), H. Martin Smith, aud Ihaia llutana. A number of transfers and leases were dealt with, aud others were partially heard. Mr. J. Lomas, Chief Inspector of Factories, is at present on an official visit to Masterton.
