IN SEARCH OF THE HUIA.
"AN EVEN MONEY CHANCE." "It is a regular lottery whether we get any or not—what might be, called an.even money chance," remarked Mr. Edgar Stead, when discussing the prospects of the search for-'Euia birds, on which ho is embarking, at tho instance of tho Government... Mr. Stead left Wellington for Taihape by yesterday's express, and on arrival there he will bo joined by Mr. Batloy, of Moawhango, and two or three Natives who are familiar with the habits and calls of the huia. . A start will be made from Taihapo on Saturday morning, when the party will make straight for tho bush in which it is hoped to find the birds. .If there are any birds to bo secured Mr. Stead is confident, that ho will be able to catch them, but aftor his experience in tho same locality last year his fear is that he may not come across any. The party will return almost immediately if they are successful, but in any event they will not stay later than September 20. If any birds are obtained, Mr. Stead will communicate with -Mr. Hamilton, Director of tho Museum, who will havo arrangements . made to transfer the catch to tho Little Barrier bird sanctuary.
