His Excellency the Governor has intimated that he will bo pleased to attend and present the Plunket Medal at tho annual competition of the University Debating Society, on September 10. Tho other speakers will ba his Worship tho Mayor (Mr. T.'M. Wilford, M.P,; and Professor Laby. Quito an official welcome will be accorded to Lady Islington on her arrival from England by tho Turakina this morning. Tho steamer will bo berthed at 9.30 a.m. at tho Queen's Wharf, whore will bo assembled 300 of the senior girls of tho State schools of the city, who will form up in rows four deep. A guard of honour will bo accorded Her Excellency by a squad of the New Zealand Royal Artillery, and tho boys of the training ship Aniokura. The Prime Minister, Lady Ward, tho members of tho Cabinet, and their wives will also be present when Lady Islington steps, ashore. AH traffic will be stopped oh tho Queen's Wharf from the time Lady Islington leaves tho steamer until she leaves tho precincts of the wharf for Government House. Tho Ministers of the Crown and their wives are issuing invitations to a garden party, to bo given in honour of Lady Islington,. in the grounds of Parliamentary Buildings, on Saturday afternoon.
The Hon. J. Marshall, M.L.C., who is at present laid aside by illness, was granted, a further week's leave of absence by tho Legislative Council yesterday.
Among the passengers , to arrive from Sydney yesterday were Mr. Joseph Mandol, of . Wellington; Mr. James M'Menamin,' i of Terawhiti; and Mr. H. Nash, of Palinerston North.
Mr. Harold Bcauchamp, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, returned to Wellington yesterday from Sydney after a. trip to the Islands.
The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. Thomas Rowell, of Kilbirnie, an old resident -of this city. .The deceased, who was born at North Shields, England, was 68 years of age. He came out to Melbourne when a lad, and when still a youth was . attracted to Otago in tho days of the gold rush, and later was resident in Marlborough at the. time of tho Maungatapu murders. Ho was one of the first members of Court Robin Hood (Foresters). His widow arid nine children survive him; There aro six sonsMessrs. Thomas, George, David, Maston, William, and Victor Eowell—and three daughters—Mrs. Williams (Levin), Mrs. G. llickard (Palraerston North), and one unmarried. The funeral will take place to-day.
Mr. Leo. Devine, son of the late.Mr. J. J. Devine, arrived from Sydney yesterday. Mr. Devine has been a student at the Riverview College, Parramatta, for the past three years.
