The Whakatane arrived in the stream at 6.15 o'clock last night, and will berth at-No. 1 Jcrvois Quay Wharf "this morning. She has part cargo for - Lyttelton and Dunedin. v
STRATHCLYDE,FROM NEW YORK. Strathclyde, s.s., from New York, arrived in the stream last, night at 7.55. She is bringing cargo from New York, via Auckland, and will berth at the Taranaki Street Wharf this morning. . THE SYDNEY STEAMER. Word has been received that the Union Oompany's steamer Manuka, which left Sydney at 3 p.m. on Saturday, has 140 passengers on board for ail ports. - She is expected to put, in an appearance early to-morrow morning. TO LIFT WOOL. The steamers Turkistan and Afghanistan are both under charter to tho New Zealand Shipping Company for outward loading. It is understood that both vessels will load in the Dominion on behalf of tho company in tho coming wool Eeason. THE .WARSHIPS. Both the Encounter and Pioneer put to sea yesterday morning, en route for Picton and Lyttelton respectively. The former is due at Picton on Friday next, and is duo' back at Wellington on September 6 for coaling purposes., The Pioneer is duo. at Lyttelton on August 27. A report received from Blenheim yesterday afternoon i. stated that both vessels were at Port "Underwood at 4 p.m. THE TURAKINA. 'It is now 'expected that the New "Zealand Shipping Company's Turakina should put in an appearance early on Thursday morning. The vessel left Hobart at 7 p.m.on Saturday in continuation of her voyage from London to New Zealand. ' HINEMOA LANDING STORES. . ~ On ' Friday the.' Hineinoa was landing stores at the Brothers Lighthouse, and, on Saturday,.Stephen's Island was visited. Yesterday the vessel was engaged in overhauling the ' buoys in the French Pass. To-day, if theiweather is favourable, Farewell Spit will be' visited; otherwise a call will be made at Nelson. The vessel is expected back during tho early part of this week.
WELLINGTON-SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE. VENTURE •' MEETS" WITH SUCCESS. About a-year ago the Union S.S. Co. of New Zealand and Messrs. J. D. Sprockcls, of San Francisco, came to an an agreement whereby a passenger and cargo route from Wellington to San Francisco, via Tahiti, was opened on trial. The arrangement was that the Union Company was to run its steamer Mokoia from Wellington to Tahiti, to' connect with Messrs. Sprccltel's steamers, Alameda and Mariposa, from San Francisco. The results havo been highly encouraging and the service is to be indefinitely continued. The Mokoia leaves Wellington on- her next trip on September 16, and her passengers and cargo will, be transhipped to the Mariposa at Tahiti. An early arrival in port this morning will be the U.S.S. Company's chartered steamer Wakefield with a cargo of coal from Newcastle, via Auckland. " It is announced that the Caldergrovc, which arrived at the Bluff at 8 a.m. yesterday, is to.proceed to Australian ports for the purpose of loading grain for lfomc or the Continent. Concerning tlio wrecked steamer Lauderdale a telegram received from Greymouth states" that all her heavy machinery was to bo removed on Saturday, and discharging operations were commenced in regard to her cargo of timber yesterday. The T.S.S.- Kairaki is advertised to sail for Greymouth and Hokitika to-day at 3 p.m.
