SUPREME COURT SESSIONS.

AT - PALMERSTON.. (By Telegraph—Special' Correspondent.) I Palmerston North, 1 August' 22. • The Supreme Court opened this morning. Judge 'Cooper, in charging the Grand Jury, congratulated Palmerston North on the fact that there, were no criminal cases arising in the town' which, for such a largo population, was particularly gratifying.*. All the cases came from outside p'laees. The Grand Jury found true bills against James Audley Register, alleged' criminal assault; William' Walker, and John Hayes, alleged theft; Arnold; Charles 1 Harold Palenski, alleged serious offence; Thomas O'Connor; alleged theft.

Archibald Muily convicted at the previous sitting; of stealing moneys belonging' to the Longburn Freezing' Works Company, was, brought up for sentence. Judge Cooper said that lie would take into consideration the fact that the jury had added'a recommendation to mercy to the verdict;'also'that prisoner was an. old man, and that his previous character had been good. The circumstances wero such as made it impossible'lo apply the provisions of >tho Probation Act. Prisoner had undergone' a severe punishment in that lie had stood three trialf with their attending suspense.. James Audley Register;, alias Crawford, 31 years of age, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault on a girl , under the age of 12 years at- Bulls. * The judge said that the 'circumstances were such that lie'would not . allow the offence to bo passed over lightly. ; Accused would be sentenced to two years' haul laliotu.

William Walker ana John llayes were, charged with having broken and entered the store-room, of the Gretna Hotel, Tailinpe, on July H, and having stolen there; from a side of bacon, the property or A. J. Kelly. Accused were fouuu net guilty, aud were discharged. Arnold Charles - Harold Palenski waa acquitted on a serious charge.
