MASTERTON NOTES.

; (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton,-'August 20. There was only a. moderate attendance at the lheeting of ratepayers held in tfie Town llall on Friday evening to discuss the proposal oil the Borough Council to raise a loan of .£31,000 for the extension of the drainage system of the town. The Mayor (Mr. J. M.. Coradine) outlined the scheme at considerable length, and pointed out the urgency, from a health point of view, of completing the drainage. .Incidentally he mentioned that if the present loan were not carried the council would be put to considerable expense in 1 taking up the sewage main in Cole Street and Lincoln Boatl and in putting in fresh mains. A' resolution was carried with a few dissentients, supporting the .proposal of the Borough Council. At the meeting yesterday of the council of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. C. B. Daniell mentioned that there seemed to be a dosire on the part of a majority of the members of the. North Island • Railway League to secure grants from the Public Works Fund for railway lines north of Auckland, to the possible exclusion of that between Masterton and Waipukurau, which would open up a vast area of splendid country. ■ Mr. 12. L. llolmwood, of Wellington, and formerly- of 'Masterton, bns purchased the property of Ml. W. A. Noale, of Taipni, adjoining Lake Waikaromoaua, and comprising 4100 acres. The sale was effected through the agency of Mr. C. C. Boss, of .Masterton.. In connection with the proposal to rnise a loan ot .£31,000 for the purpose of extending the drainage system, it may be interesting to know that at present not one-half : of he drainage area is served with the drainage.

Masterton, August 21. Mrs. J. K. Jacobsen, a very old. lesident of Mauriceville,. died at Masterton Hospital to-day, at the ago of 72 years.
