(Before Mr. W. G. Eiddel, S.M.) RINGS BEHIND THE WINDOW. ■' A CHARGE TO BE ANSWERED. Thomas Finnerty, who appeared in court in a blue overcoat and with his hands in his pockets, was charged with, on the evening of August' 20, breaking and entering the shop of Frank Grady, Willis Street, by day, and stealing therefrom one pearl ring, value. .£9, one diamond and ruby ring, value £lb 155., one ruby and diamond ring, value ,£l2 155., one pearl and diamond ring, value £11 12s. lid., one diamond ring, value .£23, one turquoise and diamond ring, value ,£l2 155., total value 17s. 6d., the property' of Frank .Grady.- On the application of Sub-Inspector Norwood, the accused was remanded till August 24.
THEFT FROM FELLOW-LODGER. -Alexander Eadie, alias Ainslie, was 'charged with theft on August 1G of a pair of trousers, value.'2os., the property of John O'Leary. He was further charged with theft on August i 7 of a razor, value 7s. 6d.y the property of Luke M'Gann. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that accused had been stopping with John O'Leary in a 'boardinghouse, and after O'Leary had gone to work, Eadie had taken the trousers and sold them to a second-hand dealer. They had since been recovered. The razor had beeu taken from tho same boardinghouse, and sold in au hotel bar for Is., but had not been recovered., There were several previous convictions, against-accused, who was sentenced to two months' imprisonment; on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. An order was made , that the trousers were to be returned to the owner on payment of the amount at which thoy were purchased by the second-hand dealer.
; .£5 WORTH OF "LANGUAGE." John Cochrane pleaded guilty to a charge of using improper' language on Lambton Quay, and asked lo be dealt with summarily. He was fined J5, and witnesses' expenses, totalling 18s.
THE INEBRIATES.. Mary Wilson pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness. . She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, a prohibition-or-der to be issued against her. Tho magistrate ' reminded her that if she came beforo him again as an habitual inebriate she Would be liable to a term of imprisonment. I Sarah-Jainieson, who was found helplessly drunk.on August'2l, was remanded for curative treatment. Louisa Maitlaud, oil a charge of drunkenness, was fined 55., in default hventy■four" hours' imprisonment. One firstufl'ender made no appearance, and forfeited his bail -of 10s.
BY-LAW GASES. John M'Ateer did not appear to answer n charge that, on August 5, at Wellington, being in charge of two horses, lie was nway from such horses so as to be unable to have full control over them. He was fined 105.,' with costs 75., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment.
