PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
' (From Our Special Correspondent.) : Palmerston, August.22. A small house in Boundary Road, the property of Mr. E. Trevor,, was destroyed by firo at an early hour yesterday morning. . It .was a total loss, as- the cottage' was uninsured. Mr. S. W. Luxford, a very old resident of Palmerston, but who for some time lias been living at Devonport, Auckland, is now on a visit to Palmerston. The Palmerston Guards have made the following promotions -.—Sergeant Dalziell to bo colour-sergeant; Corporals. Green and Haddon to be acting-sergeants. Lieutenant Willoughby is holding ',an in.struction class for the non-commissioned candidates, of whom there are, seven. ; ■ Mr. R. M'Nab, who takes up his' residence here permanently on Thursday next, is bringing the whole of his library of books, manuscripts, logs, charts, plans, and pictures, relating to the early history of New Zealand. To ensure'their safely lie is building a fire-proof •.annexe to the .residence which, lie recently acquired from Mr. J. H. nankins, in Fitzhei-bert Street. At the Police Court this morning an old offender named Robert Johns,, who lias above. a dozen previous convictions recorded against him, was charged with being disorderly and with assaulting the proprietor of one of the hotels here and refusing to leave the premises. Ho was fincd r forty, shillings on one charge, and sentenced' to fourteen days' hard labour, without the • option of a fine, on the others. ...
