His Excellency the Governor, who has now practically'recovered from his indisposition, took advantage of the bright intervals yesterday afternoon to take a little excroise in the grounds of the new Government House. Strange to say,every member of Ms Excellency's official stall has suffered from colds during the past few weeks. The whole of the household staff are- working very hard just now preparing for the arrival of Lady Islington, who is due from Loudon, via Cope Town and Hobart, at about midnight to-mor-row. The vessel will not be berthed until about 8 a.m., when her Excellency will land, and be at once driven to her new home at Mount View. His Excellency has made no engagements for the next week or ten days. It has been stated that Court mourning will terminate on September 6. This is not so. The period will terminate on September. 30, after which half-mourning will •bo observed. No dances will'be given until after May 11 of next year, but during the halfmourning period, their Excellencies may give or attend dinner parties and receptions.

Sir William Steward, M.P. for Waitaki, is among the passengers by the Mararon, which will arrive from the south this morning. <

The consecration ot Dr. Cleary as Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland took place on Sunday in the Cathedral at. Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland. Dr. 'Cleary was born at Onlart, a small town-a few miles from Enniscorthy, and his consecration thus took place in the cathedral nearest to his native place. The Auckland branch of the Hibernian Society lias sent a cablegram to Dr. Cleary. expressing its congratulations, and a similar message will be sent to him on behalf of the Auckland clergy to-daj. Di. Cleary will visit Home before coming to Auckland'.

Yesterday morning the Very Kov. Father O'Shea, Yicar-Geueral of. the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington, received a telegram from Auckland announcing the death of the Rev. Father O'Meara, parish priest in Feilding; The deceased had been in indifferent health, and entered the Mater Misiericordiae Hospital in Auckland, where he died. Father O'Meara was ,born in Ireland about half a century ugo, and was educated at Ennis and Carlow Colleges. He arrived in New Zealhnd '11 years ago, and was stationed at Ha-w-era, Jlastertou, and Wellington before going to Feilding. For a time lie was attached to tho Sacred Heart Basilica in Hill Street. The body will be brought to Feilding, where the funeral will tako place. Mr. E. H. Simons, station-master at Petone, is at present on annual leave, Mr. L. B. Stansell being in charge of tho station. ' Among tho prizes presented at a Guy's Hospital garden party recently was tho treasurer's gold medal for - clinical medicine, which was .won by Mr. T. D. M. Stout, son of Sir liobert Stout, Chief Justice of New Zealand. Dr. Howard Christie, son of Jfr. H. H. Christie, of Wanganui, who has, for the past few years, been pursuing his profession in England, returns to Wanganui shortly, and (says our local correspondent) will go into partnership with Drs. Christie and Wilson. Mr. Charles Matthews, manager ■ for Messrs. Alcock and Co. in Wellington, is confined to his' bed through illness. Tho cause of the death of Mr. James Mnir (of the firm o? King and Jluir, tailors, of Wellington) at .Ashbnrton on Sunday is said.to have been heart failuro supervening on influenza. Mr.' Muir was unmarried. His parents reside in Wellington. Mr. J. S. Swan, who has beon on 'a trip to Sydney, returned to Wellington yesterday by tho Main Trunk express. The appointment of Mr. Win. H. Ferris, Government hemp grader, to tho position of chief hemp expert was docidefl upon at a meeting of Cabinet yesterday afternoon. Mr. P. Higginbottom, of Messrs. Ross and Glendining, Ltd., Wanganui, arrived in town by last night's express, and is staying at the Hotel Windsor;
