Sir, —In justice to Tue Dominion and to its correspondent) I should be glad if yon will,allow mc to reply to Mr. Stnnsell's letter in your paper today. I enclose herewith a notification of the meeting called by Mr. J. It. Stansell. It is written by himself and you will notice, that it was called, "to discuss the advisability of Government granting a bonus on machinery that will save labour and increase the rent and royalty for a few wealthy owners of flax land." Mr. Stansell says in Ill's letter: "Mr. Gunning moved, should be' "Mr. J; R. Stansell moved" that the Government bo respectfully requested to grant a bonus on the invention of machinery tliat will improve the quality of hemp that is manufactured in New Zealand. If you refer to Tiie Dominion of August 18,, you will note that the amendment which Mr. Gunning supported was "that tlie Government bo asked to grant the request mado by the Flaxtnillers' Association with reference to a bonus for hemp machinery." This amendment was moved in opposition to Mr. J. K: Stansoll's motion "that the Government bo requested to hold over the granting of a bonus for improved flax machinery which would do away with labour and thus put money into the pockets of a few wealthy flax-owners. Mr. Stansell alone supported this motion and was the only dissentient, to Mr. Gunning's amendment. Ho had already circulated a petition to the same effect. This motion and the one in connection with the Post Office were the chief resolutions of the evening s entertainment. _ lln connection "with Mr. Stansell s statement'that your correspondent reported that lie intended to stand for Otaki, if: you refer to The Dominion of August 18 you will see that I sard "that lie intended to stand as a candidate for tlio Manawatu—possibly 'he • meant Otaki' electorate, etc." Trusting you will give. this letter publication, —I am, etc., ' < . Correspondent. Sir,—ln Tire. Dominion of August 18 your local correspondent stated that Mr. ..J. R. Further he stated that the mover was the only one who voted for it. Mr. Gunning moved as an amendment "That ttid Government bo asked to ' grant the request, made by tlio Flaxmillers'. Association with reference to a bonus for hemp mach'm--ery." Sir. Logan seconded the resolution which, was carried, Mr. Stansoll being the only dissentient.
