SHIELD CONTEST. WANGANUI DEFEATED. An eleven representing AVellington met and defeated .AA'anganui, at Day's Bay, on Saturday afternoon. It was the fifth shield event, and tho local team triumphed over their opponents with, comparative ease. Wellington have retained the shield, after having met various challenging teams already this season, and Auckland aro next on the list. AVellington were over-confident of success in their match with AA'anganui, and for the most part of the game tho lormer held the opposing side at bay. Mr. H. V. AValton rcfereed. The teams were as follow: — Wellington (Yellow and Black).—L. Davies (goal-keeper), C. Hickson (captain), , and H. Harty full-backs); L. C. C. Christie, C. Campbell, R. Thompson (halves), R'. Parton, D. Smith. G. Strack, 0. Strack, E. Loader. AA'anganui (Blue and Black).—J. E. Marshall (goal-keeper); C. • Bathgate and A. O. Cava (full-backs); B. liassetl, E. V. Spear (captain), and AV. Gurr (halves); A. Andrews, W. Thompson, J. Soler, C. Parker, and H. Naylor (forwards). AA'anganui won the toss, and played against tho wind. The initial bully-off was taken no fewer than three times, owing to a breach. AA'ellington attacked from tho jump, Marshall, in-goal, effecting a good save, and Wanganui returned tho leather down into their oppommts' twenty-five. Play went to and fro for a while. On one occasion t a score seemed certain for AVanganui.' However., AVellington kept up a pressure which necessitated AVanganui conceding many corners. A' shot by G. Strack was well saved by Bassett on oiio occasion. A good opportunity for scoring was lost to AA'anganui, through Parker kicking the ball. AVellington were having the best of tho game so far. Occasionally ,Bassett would opuri up tho game for his side, but AVellington's back defence was quite equal to tho task of saving. G. Strack made several tttempts to penetrate the AVanganui full-back line, but Bathgate and Cane worked well, and rescued their side frequently. The Wellington back's were . also pjaying a sterling game. Parton now camo m with some 'tricky play, so also did Loader. .'Soler mado one grand rush, and presently Geo. Strack received the ball from Parton, passing it on to his brother Con, the latter running into the goalmouth, where Marshall was .' waiting to save. AVellington were , determined to succeed, and after Cave had conceded somo corners the local forwards made the scrumming deadly right in front of. AVanganui's goal net. -Marshall'could' not cope with the frequent and extremely quick shots, and finally C. Strack scored whilst Marshall was recovering himself. ■ This was the first score. Wellington, 1; AVanganui,;o. After conceding a corner, AVanganui by medium of Bassett instituted an' at-' tack, and after some passing was indulged in Hickson effected a splendid save. . AVellington were unsuccessful with several forward movements, Loader being conspicuous. AVanganui presently carried play into the opposing circle, and Andrews scored a fine goal. AVellington, .1; AVanganui, 1. AVanganui were greatly. ' stimulated now, and made matters look shaky for AVellington frequently. ' The game became moro oven for' a few minutes, and presently the visitors were aggressive. • Spear took a pass from An.drowsy.'and; sent up a very high shot. ''Cave'-was here playing a great defensive game for AVanganui. Wanganui -were'pressing at half-time. :. Soon after the commencement of.the second spell Bassett tried his luck, butfailed to score. G. Strack and Loader were conspicuous with' fine individual efforts.' 'Wellington continued to hover round AA'anganui quarters, C. Strack taking a wide shot at the net. At this point play became'much, more live-' ly. All AVanganui's forward movements were broken up by Hickson in grand style. *The left wing on AVa-' nganui's-side made'a really fine effort, and more energy and combination wero seen'amongst' the ranks of the'visiting team, but they could not score again. Spear was very conspicuous, .especially when he fell in shooting a goal, thus losing a point. After G. Strack had sbone out with a fine individual run and a corner and free-hit had been taken by AVellington, C. Strack scored an easy goal, thus giving his sido tho lead. AVellington, 2; AVanganui, 1. This success was the signal for moro combined dash from the Wellington eleven. Play was very fast, and G. Strack took a pass from Loader, and scored from' a scramble. AVellington, 3; AVanganui,' 1. Wellington attacked persistently. Bassetl; and Co. made heroic efforts to break away, but Harty saved' the situation, each time. Parker scored onco off-side. "With'only tens minutes to go, G. Strack got in a fine run, but Loader was .not handy to assist, and a good'ehance was lost to AVellington. Wellington were now liaving the best of .the game, and sent in many erratic shots at goal: Before . call of time, Smith .took a pass from Christie, and scored. AA'ellington, 4; AVanganui, 1. THE AUCKLAND MATCH. The AVellington-Auckland contest for tho shield has been postponed until September 10, and practice games have been arranged in the meantime. Preliminary to the'men's contest at Day's Bay, the- AA'ellington A and B representative teams for the Nelson tournament were respecively engaged in' friendly games with the Craven College eleven and a local side.
