The Hawko's Bay : Education Board , is 'at loggerheads with • the . Depart- ■ nient on the question, of a Government ■ grant • for Takapuna/ School (Southern, Hawko's Bay). The board's estimate of cost'of the building-was £1000, but: the Department only allowed a grant of £375, alid suggested that a building be erected at a: cost of about -£800.,. This was without furniture. It.was stated that'the original school, "which is now io be replaced, was, with the \ land, given by Air. Sydney Johnston. The secretary stated.at the board meet-- . ing that the Department was simply granting' money for an addition, but w'ero. not, taking the new school into consideration at all. He could -. not' make out how/they had arrived: at their figures. The Department withheld the . information—why he could' not say. . Many notices of motion for the Education .Conference dealt with this subject. A discussion took place on the fact that the Department reduced every grant applied, for. '■•.•■.' Mr; G. It was decided that application for n' further grant of £400 bo sent in, and that'the delegates to the; conference interview the. Minister • Further reference was made to . the subject when the secretary reported that £303 had been granted for the AVanstead School, although £418 bad been asked, for. A member: Whom are.we going to rob to pay this shortage ? The secretary: We can over-expend and get a tag on the .balance-sheet.' '.It was decided to call for tenders' for the erection . s of the school.
