« . ELECTIONS IN PROGRESS. Oy Telegraph—Press Association—Cupyrlsht. (Roc. August, 21. 6.20 p.m.) London, August 21. The elections for the new South African Union Parliament uro proceeding, and numbers- of returns are already tu hand. Tim Johannesburg correspondent of the "Daily Mail" forecasts that the Bothu Cabinet will have a majority of fifteen in the House of Commons, which is to cuiisist of 121 members. The following were elected in Orange River Colony:—Mr. Abraham Fisher .(Premier of Orange River Colony and Union Minister for Laiids), General Hertzog (Attorney-General for Orange River Colony and Union Minister for Justice), and Mr. E. It. Walton. . In Cape Colony Dr. Jameson (Leader of the Unionist party), Mr. J. X. Merriman (Capo Premier), and Mr. J. W. Sauer (Commissioner of Pubiio Works, Capo Colony, and Minister for Railways and Harbours in the Union Government) were elected. The Hon. T. W. Smartt, an exCape Colony Minister, has been returned unopposed. Mr. Me'rriman, speaking at Victoria West, his old constituency, said he did not deny that he would have been willing to. accept the Premiership of the Union, which the Governor-Gen-eral had, however, bestowed upon tho Premier of the Transvaal. It would, Mr. Merriman declared, havo been safer and preferable to have started the Union on Capo Colony rather man Transvaal lines. •
