■— ?— —— MR. W. P. ALEXANDER ENTERTAINED, The members of the-literary staff of The DoMiNiON-forogathered at Godber's Rooms on Saturday evening to bid farewell to Mr. W. E. Alexander, who has been appointed editor of the "Timaru Herald." The chair was occupied by Mr. C. Earle, editor of The Dominion, who expressed his warmest admiration for Mr. Alexander's ability as a journalist and tho personal qualities which had won for him tho respect and friendship of' all the members of the stair. Ho had known him since he entered the profession as a junior on tho Christchurch "Press," and his progress since then had been the result of great industry allied to high literary gifts, . a keen news sense, and sound judgment. He.had won his way on his merits, and his record should -sorvo as an excellent example for any young journalist to follow. On behalf of the staff he presented Mr. Alexander with a pair of "Groos" prism binoculars in a leather caso, which bore a silver plate, suitably inscribed. Appreciative speeches were also made by Messrs. M. 0. Keano (associate-editor), N. E. Burton, (chief sub-editor), Harcus Plimmer (chiof-of-staff), and D. Morgan (chief reader). In replying, Mr. Alexander said that the value-of. the experience .he had gained on The Dominion staff could not bo over-estimated, and it would bo a very long time indeed before he would be able to persuade himself that lio was not still'« member of the staff. During the course of the evening tho toast of the "Timaru Herald" was proposed by Mr. Earle, and drunk with enthusiasm. Songs, recitations, etc., were contributed by Messrs. C. J. K'Kinnon, Reynolds, A. W. Dunkley, S. V. Bracher, and H. Plimmer.
